We had made two one third scale models of the glider made and we launched them using radio control from the planned launch site. Karl A. Loose  My emotions are at a peak rigt now. Both of my parents were from Colditz as well as all my other relatives. I had the opportunity to visit Colditz at 12 and we always heard about Colditz growing up. As a matter of fact right now in our house my wife and I have a large painting of the Schloss (castle) in our living room. This past September my Uncle Hans Apel visited us from Colditz and showed us many current pictures and brought us up to date on current life there. This was the first time I saw him in 36 years and our visit was fantastic! I only wish my parents had lived to see the re-unofication of Germany. If anyone has any stories and wishes to E-Mail me, bitte mach das! Karl   buffet@nothinbut.net

Schnee
Schnee faellt,
und ich sehe --
anderen Schnee fallen:
Schnee, den Kinder werfen,
aus dem sie Schneemaenner bauen,
und Hoehlen;
Lachen hoere ich --
und ich sehe --
Schnee fallen:
Schnee, den die Glut von
Bomben und brennenden Haeusern
schmilzt.
Mein Mantel,
nassgeworden in der Eimerkette,
ist steifgefroren,
hart und kalt wie ein Sarg. --
Und ich sehe --
Schnee fallen:
Schnee, durch den die
russischen Gefangenen marschieren,
gesenkten Hauptes, aber
noch im Leid nicht ohne Gesang --
Schnee, durch den die
ungarischen Juden getrieben werden,
von denen ich nur die
angstgrossen Augen sehe.
Und ich sehe --
Schnee fallen:
Durch den die ostpreussischen Fluechtlinge
mit ihrer armseligen Habe stolpern:
"Wir sin ja jlaeich da, Jrossvatter!"
Aber Grossvater im Handwagen
hoert nicht; er wird nie mehr ankommen;
denn er ist tot.
Und ich sehe --
Schnee fallen:
Der die Ruinen deckt,
auf dem die von Lastwagen gefallenen
Kohlebrocken leuchten, um die sich
Maenner, Frauen und Kinder
schlagen, weil zu Hause der Ofen
kalt ist --
Und
    ich sehe
        Schnee fallen ...

Kay Hoskins I visited wonderful Colditz in 1993. We were looking for relatives-descendants of Richard Richter a master shoemaker and part time postmaster of Colditz. We loved the town and since have thankfully found loving Colditz relatives. I there there are more cousins! We hope to return to Colditz soon, meet our relatives and spend more time getting to know the city.

Dr. John von Colditz  My daughter (13 years old) visited the castle this summer. She had a wonderful time! It was fun for her to see where her family had been, so long ago. I have enjoyed her pictures, as has her grandfather.

Christmas 1941 and seeing in the New Year 1942
Christmas in Colditz 1941 We had a very happy time, considering, with good news just before to cheer everybody up. After an Anglo Dutch church service, we had dinner for the orderlies which officers cooked and served; several of them failed to complete all courses, which speaks well for the Red Cross Supply. In the afternoon the French gave a mystery play, which, considering the great difficulty of doing female parts, and those of the Christmas story, was very good indeed. The dresses and scenery were excellent. The French make the most amazing paper creations, with cardboard corsetry etc., and though the chorus are apt to crack and rattle a bit at speed, its surprising how realistic they look. Perhaps it helps the hero to put the right tender note into the love scene, to know that the heroine has got to last another two nights at least! We had dinner all together in the evening, the room very gay with crests of all regiments round the walls - dinner consisted of soup, salmon, pork and peas, Xmas pudding, sweets and coffee, a pretty good contrast to last year.... The snow arrived on Christmas night, and should lie now; the most terrific snowball fights take place after and snowfall before, after (and during) appell - this disposes of all but the heaviest snowfall from the centre of the yard and leaves it in ball form round the edges or plastered as near misses round the doorways...
New Year 1942 We saw the new year in with great verve - we started off with ourselves and the Dutch, then French Belgian and Polish friends turned up and finally the whole party formed and went through everybody's quarters up and down winding staircases and wished everyone a New Year of Liberation and finally (for about the 4th time) all National Anthems were sung and the whole snake precipitated itself down the snow slide, and so, roughly speaking, to bed! Michael J. REID (Son of Maj. P. R. Reid) Should you wish to write an e-mail please write in English or French. My father was in Colditz for two years. 1940-1942. He did manage to escape and wrote a very fine book about his experiences. You may well have read it. All my kindest regards for Christmas ! I shall be away from my computer as of 20/12/96 and will not be able to receive E-mail until January 8th. Yours Sincerely, Michael J. Reid

Joachim F. L. Sommerfeld  Ach, Ihr lieben Leute!!!! Schreibt mir jemand? James Allen Knechtmann You have a very interesting web page. I am a student of German military history and Colditz - and Saxony itself - has a rich history in this regard. Would it be possible for you to add a page about the role Colditz played in the Befreiungskrieg 1813? The itineraries for the tours of the castles are very useful, and one day I hope to be able to travel them. So much history! Lastly, I would be curious to discover if anyone might be able to give me some anecdotes or documentation for the old military districts of the Royal Saxon Army of the Second Empire (XII. and XIX. Armeekorpsbezirke) and Wehrkreis IV of the 1920s, 1930s and World War II.
