Notes

This picture appeared as plate 58 in DETOUR edited by Lieut. J. R. Wood, M.C. Royal Canadian Engineers, Falcon Press 1946.
The Plate inscription reads:
THE COURTYARD IN WINTER
MAJOR W.F.ANDERSON MBE MC & BAR
Royal Engineers

A Regular Sapper Officer who, despite being taken out of circulation at Dunkirk wore the MBE,MC and Bar and three service ribbons.
He was an exceedingly ingenious and clever craftsman with his hands.  When  the  Escape  Committee  lost  their  "Pukka"  camera  on a  Blitz  search,  he  made  them  one  out  of  somebody's  old  glasses and  bits  of  wood.  Our  Australian   photographer,  (in  peacetime  a professional),  said  it  did  better  work  than  the   manufactured one!
