"Andy" & "Vandy"Major W F Anderson Royal Engineers
"Vandy" was the Dutch Escape Officer at Colditz. Many escapes were attributed
to his tireless efforts.
He returned to the East Indies when WWII was over and was promoted to battalion commander. He played an important part in liberating 800 Chinese in West Java but on 29 June 1946 was killed in action against Indonesian rebels. Major P.R. Reid writes of the Dutch contingent in Colditz as follows in "Colditz the Full Story" : "The escape record throughout the war, 1940-45, of Vandy's sixty-eight officers and cadets, mostly of the Dutch East Indies Forces, who were sent from Holland in 1940 to Colditz via Soest and Juliusburg is here set down : thirteen made home runs, two others reached Russia and died there, and in addition this company can lay claim to twenty-seven 'gone-aways', i.e. escapes." |
